Honey is one of the rare sugary foods that causes a controlled increase in the amount of insulin being secreted, which also promotes tryptophan to be released into the brain.
Tryptophan is normally converted into serotonin, which induces a feeling of relaxation. Furthermore, serotonin is commonly converted to melatonin, a well-researched sleep aid. Through that rather confusing chemical pathway, honey and milk can be used to reduce sleeplessness!
This is how you can make this magic potion:
- 1 drop vanilla extract
- 1 tsp honey
- 6 oz milk
- In a small saucepan heat the milk to warm, but not boiling.
- Remove from heat and pour into glass. Add vanilla and honey.
- Stir well and sip slowly before bed.
For those who are lactose intolerant, follow the recipe exactly as above, simply replace the milk with a lactose free substitute like soy, rice or almond milk.
