Take a glass of warm water, add a teaspoon of salt in it and mix well. Gargle with this saltwater twice or thrice a day and especially before going to the bed. The salt water is highly effective for getting rid of the mucus causing irritation in the throat and also help reduce inflammation in the throat.


Thyme is one of the best herbs that can help treat lung infections. Not only it helps the lungs to get rid of the mucus but it also strengthens them. It is very effective against bacterial infections. To get rid of bronchitis, just boil half a teaspoon of thyme in a cup of water and let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes. You can add honey to sweeten this tea. Consume this tea two times a day.

You can also get rid of the congestion by rubbing thyme oil on your chest. Take 2 parts olive oil, combine it with 1 part thyme oil and massage your chest with this oil. Keep your chest covered after the application of this oil.

Onions and Honey
Honey has always been very effective in treating viral and bacterial infections. Onions help to get rid of the mucus and also relieve cough. All you need to do is slice an onion and pour honey on it, covering each and every slice and leave it overnight. In the morning remove the onion slices from the honey and consume a teaspoon of this honey 3 to 4 times a day. Consuming raw honey can also be very beneficial for curing coughs.

Ginger has been used since ages for treating cough and the common cold. You can get rid of bronchitis by consuming ginger tea. You can easily make it at home by taking a small piece of ginger and crush it. Add it to a cup of boiling water, add a pinch of cinnamon powder to it and let it steep for 3 minutes. Use this tea 2 to 3 times a day.

You can also add a few drops of ginger juice to a teaspoon of honey and consume it 3 times a day to get rid of sore throat and cough.

Almonds are rich in essential vitamins and other nutrients like calcium, magnesium and potassium. They have the ability to cure a large number of diseases, especially infections in the respiratory tract. So chew some almonds to treat bronchitis. You can even crush 2 to 3 almonds and take them with a teaspoon of warm honey, sprinkled with a pinch of cinnamon powder.

Lemon can effectively treat bronchitis and also helps to get rid of the mucus in the throat and lungs. Make lemon tea and consume it twice or thrice a day to cure sore throat and coughs. Add 1 teaspoon of lemon zest to a cup of water and boil for 5 minutes on a low flame. You can also gargle with lemon water to get rid of the problem. Add a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice to a cup of warm water. Gargle with this water twice or thrice a day.

When bronchitis hits you drink plenty of fluids especially warm liquids like soups and tea. Steam and humidifiers are also very effective for soothing the respiratory tract.
