Natural Treatment for Gray Hair

Gray hair can be a dreadful sight, especially for people who haven’t even hit their 30s. Not only  gray hair makes you look old but it also signifies poor health conditions.

Nutritional deficiencies can be one of the major causes of premature graying. Lack of essential vitamins and minerals might cause your hair to turn gray, especially a deficiency of vitamin B and copper can cause the problem.

The pigment responsible for giving hair its color is melanin. In certain conditions the hair follicles fail to produce melanin, causing the hair to turn gray or white.

Another important factor responsible for premature graying is “Genetics”. If your parents or grandparents or other relatives developed gray hair at an early age then here’s your answer. Your genes are programmed to stop the production of melanin at an early age. In such a case it is difficult to prevent the hair from turning gray in the future.

The researchers at the University of Michigan Health System state that medical condition known as hypothyroidism can cause premature graying of the hair. It is a condition where the thyroid glands fail to produce the required amount of thyroid hormones.

There are certain studies which support the fact that premature graying can also be caused by excessive smoking.

What you need to do is take a well balanced diet, consisting of all the essential nutrients. Blackstrap molasses, wheat grass and barley grass are all known effective for avoiding premature graying of the hair. You can also take some supplements on your doctor’s recommendation containing essential vitamins, copper and zinc.

Onions
This may sound smelly but since ancient times onions were used to treat gray hair. Even today many herbalists recommend the same. The key component is “catalase enzyme” which can reverse the process of premature graying. You can also get this component from wheat grass and barley grass. Make a paste of wheat grass or barley grass and add onion juice to it. Apply this juice to your hair daily for half an hour and wash with cold water.

Gooseberry
You can also treat your gray hair with the help of Gooseberry juice. Drink a cup of gooseberry juice every day or take some gooseberries and crush them, add almond oil or coconut oil to make a paste. Massage your scalp with this mixture at night and cover with a shower cap. Leave this mixture overnight and wash your hair in the morning. You can use Indian gooseberries also known as “amla”.

Henna
Henna not only works as a natural hair dye but also as a good hair conditioner. Take 4 tablespoons of castor oil and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, add henna to it to make a paste. Apply it to your scalp and cover each and every strand of your hair. Leave it for an hour and wash with a shampoo. Repeat daily.

Rosemary
Boil together ½ a cup of rosemary and ½ a cup of sage, add water to it and boil for 30 minutes. Use a blender to make a paste. Let this mixture cool and apply it to your scalp and hair and let it dry. Wash with a good shampoo. Repeat this process once a week.

There are certain things you should avoid to stop premature graying of hair. Keep those chemical shampoos away as they can damage your hair as well as your scalp. Chemical hair dyes containing ammonia can also damage your hair. Often premature graying is caused by the use of such chemical hair colors.

Try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Add organic fruits and vegetables to your diet. Also try to take dairy product daily such as  milk, butter and yogurt. Iodine rich foods such as bananas, fish and carrots are also very effective for treating gray hair. Green leafy vegetables can also stop premature graying of your hair. Substitute your cup of coffee with green tea. Quit smoking and try to keep the stress out of your life.
