Grapefruit is an angiosperm, scientifically known as Citrus paradise. It is a subtropical fruit which is very famous for its sweet and sour taste. It is a hybrid of two species of Genus Citrus that was found in the 18th century in Barbados. Earlier, this fruit was named as Forbidden fruit; it is a hybrid of Pomelo (C. Maxima) and sweet orange (C. Sinensis). The fruit ranges from 10 – 15 cm in diameter and is of yellow- orange color. The pulp is acidic and can vary in colors from white to pink and red. There are various varieties of the grapefruit such as Ducan, Foster, Marsh, Oroblanco, Paradise Navel, RedBlush, Star Ruby, Sweetie, Thompson, and Triumph. They are available throughout the season and are at their best in winters through early springs. A Grapefruit consist of 73.3%, 23.7%, 5.6%, 5%, 3.6%, 3.3%, 2% of vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, potassium, vitamin B5, vitamin B1 (Thiamin) and calories respectively. It also contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, ash, iron, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, niacin, tryptophan, methionine, and lysine.
